Montessori Toys have been growing in popularity in recent years. Montessori tools are based on the Montessori method that was developed by Maria Montessori, which emphasizes hands-on and sensory learning. Typically, toys that follow the Montessori method are simple, and resemble real world objects. They are purposefully designed to help with specific developmental skills, and encourage creativity through open-ended play. These toys also aim to foster independence by using child-friendly tools that help them learn real world skills. Some common examples of Montessori style toys include cleaning toys, toy kitchens, and toy tools. With the holiday season rapidly approaching, we wanted to give you a look at our favorite Montessori Toys for all ages.
First, we have the Montessori Newborn Kit from Tookyland Toys. This play kit is designed for babies from 0-6 months and features high-contrast cards to support visual tracking, a rainbow ball, rain stick, baby roller, spinning rainbow Montessori wheel, and a tissue box to encourage fine motor development.
For older infants, we love the MONJOY 3 in 1 Wooden Learning Toys which contains 3 skill developing, multisensory toys. It includes a ring stacker, a shape sorting/object permanence box, and a rolling wooden giraffe. These toys are great for developing fine motor skills and an understanding of object permanence.
Toddlers are incredibly curious and eager to learn. For ages 1-3, we recommend the 5 in 1 Montessori Play Box by RONSTONE. This 5-in-1 kit contains a box style toy that has several different games: carrot harvest, matching shapes, catching magnetic worms. They can also catch fish and play a pound the ball game. These activities encourage the development of fine motor skills, problem solving, and hand-eye coordination.
For Preschoolers, check out the Montessori Screwdriver Board by TenFans. This Montessori Screwdriver board is designed to enable kids to learn the practical life skills of using tools correctly, while also allowing them to explore, practice problem solving, and gain a sense of confidence. It contains 9 different screws that can be removed and reinserted. This kit aims to help develop fine motors skills, an important precursor to writing skills, as well as cognitive skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem solving.
For older children, our favorite is the Group Makers Kit, Educational STEM toy by the Off Bits. This one-of-a-kind building kit encourages creativity and collaboration for kids 6 and up. This STEM inspired kit fosters imagination, hands-on skills and hand-eye coordination. It also aims to encourage teamwork. This maker’s kit allows endless possibilities, containing 750 parts, 20 “Supertools”, instructions, step by steps guides, and even a background for photos.
We love these Montessori toys for the 2023 holiday season. They support Montessori principles in their design simplicity, and their aim to foster specific developmental skills through open-ended play. Come back next month as we look at the best travel toys and activities!
